THE CARRETERA AUSTRAL - SOUTHERN PATAGONIA

Completed in 1988, the gravel Carretera Austral (Southern Highway) provides access to the massive wilderness of the Palena province and the Aisén region. Here you'll find world-class fishing and whitewater rafting, endless fjords and glaciers, and massive tracts of temperate rainforest. Biking and overland tours are favorite ways to take in the entirety of this little-known portion of Patagonia. The town of Coihaique provides services along the southern portion of the Carretera Austral.
