THE PATAGONIAN FJORDS - SOUTHERN PATAGONIA

During the Pleistocene, massive glaciers carved deep, vertical-walled valleys deep into the Andes; when the glaciers receded, sea level rose and inundated those valleys which lay closest to the coast, creating an extensive network of fjords and channels. With abundant rainfall off the Pacific, these fjords are refuge for magnificent stands of ancient Alerce forests. Waterfalls, abundant marine wildlife, and coastal hotsprings make the Patagonian fjords a prime location for maritime cruises and sea kayaking expeditions.
