IQUIQUE - THE NORTH OF CHILE

Capital of the Tarapacá province, Iquique is the site of one of Chile's most important naval battles - May 21, anniversary of the Battle of Iquique, is a national holiday - and contains some of the north's most impressive historic architecture, dating from the turn-of-the-century nitrate boom. Excellent hotels and beaches make Iquique a preferred departure point for trips to the desert nitrate offices and the Altiplano.
