TRUCHAIKE LODGE - PATAGONIA ARGENTINA

LOCATION

Fishing at Rio Gallegos in the province of Santa Cruz near the southernmost tip of Argentina close to the Straits of Magellan and Tierra del Fuego, is a wonderful experience.

Truchaike lodge on the banks of the Gallegos river, is only, 18 miles from Rio Gallegos international airport and is a typical patagonian estancia (sheep ranches).

The house at the Lodge, was imported from England at the beginning of the 1900's. It has five double bedrooms each with full private bathroom and abundant hot water; hearty home cooking, excellent beef & lamb barbecue are served in the dining room which is surrounded by a secluded garden. The banks of the Gallegos river are 5 minutes away.

The lodge is situated at a latitude of 52º south, which means that even in summer it can be cold and it is frequently windy. Clothing (informal) should be warm and waterproof.

FISHING
Sea-run brown trout (Salmo Trutta) on the Gallegos river these attain inmense proportions ranging in weight from 8 to 25 pounds or more!. They come in from the sea in schools, so when you hit one of them, you might actually hook four or five very large fish successively. Heavy equipment, shooting lines and weighted flies are necessary for fighting the strong wind and the vigorous trout.

Sea-run rainbow trout - steelhead - (Salvelinus Mikkis) on the Santa Cruz river, these also grow to exceptional weights in the 2 to 18 pound range; these migratory rainbow, leave the Santa Cruz river for the atlantic ocean returning to spawn later in the season. The months of March and April are the best to try to land these grand fish. Use the same equipment as for sea-run brown trout.

ALTERNATIVES TO FISHING FOR SEA-RUN TROUT
The Pelke river, a spring creek full of one to three pound brook trout ( Salvelinus Fontinalis). These will strike a dry fly or a nymph, but what drives them crazy are small deer hair bucktail and streamers; on a lucky day, you might land as many as one hundred fish!. Location is 50 miles distant from the main lodge.

There are two other interesting rivers, the Coyle Norte and the Coyle Sur with plenty of brook trout in the one to four pound range. These rivers are about 30 to 50 miles distant from Truchaike Lodge ( half an our and one hour drive each one).
The Gallegos Chico river, a wonderful spring creek, that flows into the Gallegos river. These incredible waters are home to resident brown trout, (Salmo Trutta) also weighing between two and eight pounds. Only 2 miles away from Carlota lodge, this river is considered an exceptionally good spring creek .

For all three options we recommend the use of # 4, #5 or # 6 rods and floating lines.

Due to the varied fishing alternatives available at Truchaike, we sugggest if possible, a week-long stay.

To get to Truchaike you must fly to Rio Gallegos airport from Buenos Aires city, a three hour flight by commercial jetliner and from there we will take care of you until the day you depart.
